The book is an account of Prof. Dora Akunyili during the period she served as the Director General of the Nigerian’s National Agency For Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), it chronicles the ills of fake and counterfeit medicines, substandard food, cosmetics and related products. It gave a detailed account of the challenges, intimidation, threats and the failed assassination attempt on her life, revealing her never-give up zeal despite all the setbacks and threats.

The book is divided into five parts of 18 chapters, from Chapter one that dealt with the food and drugs regulation and its historical origin, its developmental process of drugs production and sales before the 1960’s to the post NAFDAC period of 2001 and beyond to chapter 18 that covered plans for the future, recommendations and concluding thoughts on her seven and half years in office as NAFDAC Boss.

The author varnished the account with graphics, cartoons and newspaper clips of her stay in NAFDAC. Towards the end of the book, there is a long list of about 389 awards bestowed on her as a testimony of her excellent performance in office. A long list of interpretations of abbreviations used in the book and detailed indexing pages make it easy for referencing. There are also samples of NAFDAC official letters written to people in authority in an effort to form a formidable partnership against counterfeit medicines, substandard food, cosmetics and related products.

The book has no photograph of the author inside it, accept on the back page cover, there is only but five photographs showing the car and her headscarf in the assassination attempt on her, on December 26, 2003. The other photos were those of the burnt NAFDAC Operational Headquarters, Lagos. The foreword of the book was written by Francis Gurry, Director General World Intellectual Organisation (WIPO).

The book, ‘The War Against Counterfeit Medicine, My Story’ is a must read for members of the general public and the world at large, it’s a book that must be in the library of all and sundry.
